The Summer School Program at Lowell High School in Lowell, Massachusetts, is designed to build and reinforce key academic skills for student success. We provide specific programs to improve student success in MCAS focus areas. We also offer the opportunity to recover credit for academic-year courses in very specific cases outlined by Lowell School Committee guidelines. Our summer program has students who attend for MCAS tutoring, general auditing and enrichment in MCAS focus areas, and credit recovery.
Welcome to our Program! These are some of the basic rules for our summer school this year:
You should be here every day. If you are absent, please talk with me about the reasons. Classes run from July 1, 2009 through July 29, 2009, with July 5 as a holiday (20 days total). You need to make sure you do not miss any major tests at the end of the month. If you do, you might not receive a passing mark.
If you are 5 or more minutes late to class, you will need to check in through C-House.
If you are tardy three times or more, your teacher may, at his or her discretion, count the accumulated tardies as one absence.
Please dress appropriately for school. If you are in violation of the dress code and need to be sent home, it will be counted as an absence. Men
pants belted at the waist (no under-shorts showing)
no bare mid-sections
shoes or sandals (no bare feet)
no hats, bandanas, or do-rags during school hours
Women
shorts may be no shorter than the tips of your fingers when your arms are at your sides
no bare mid-sections
shoes or sandals (no bare feet)
no tube tops, no spaghetti straps (shirt straps should be two-finger widths wide)
no hats, bandanas, or do-rags during school hours
You may bring water and light snacks to any classroom, except into the computer labs. You may bring coffee and other drinks at the discretion of your teacher. If your teacher has a water-only policy, you must honor that policy. If there is a problem with litter, these privileges will be taken away. Please help keep the building clean. PLEASE NOTE THAT FREE BREAKFAST AND LUNCH WILL BE SERVED TO ALL INTERESTED STUDENTS. Details will be given in class.
You may use your phones in the halls before classes, between classes, and after classes. Your phones must be stowed away and off during class. You may not use them for any reason during class. You also may not use your phone in the hall if you are tardy. If you are seen taking a phone out during class, the following consequences apply:
1st offense — verbal warning;
2nd offense — confiscation to C-House, discussion with the director;
3rd offense — confiscation to C-House, conversation with parents, possible removal from the Summer School.
The same rules apply to iPods, other mp3 players, digital cameras, and personal gaming systems.
We have much to do and very little time in which to do it.
Please respect yourself and your fellow students by behaving in a mature and serious manner during school hours.
Violations of the LHS Student Handbook rules of conduct will be dealt with seriously and may result in immediate removal from the program.
Please use respectful language in school. (No profanity.)
Smoking anywhere near the school is a serious offense and will result in removal from the program.
You must stay in the 1980 (“New”) Building. There are no classes across the tunnels. Students caught in the other building are liable to be removed from Summer School. Enter and Exit only through the 1980 Building. Please stay out of the gym. The Police Academy will conduct classes there.
Safety is very important. If you do anything to endanger the safety of another student or staff member, you will be removed from the program immediately.
Your success is very important to us. If you need extra help please talk with your teacher or see me in C-House. If you have any conflicts with other students or if something arises outside of school that is making it hard for you to focus on your schoolwork, see me in C-House. We want to make sure that you have a successful summer and that you are ready for more success in the fall.
Thank you for your hard work this summer. You have my props that you are working hard this summer.
